Nostalgic Desserts

Dessert is not usually the first thing that comes to mind when we talk about improving nutrition in  care homes. Maybe it should be.

Working with Wibble, we explored how familiar favourites such as Strawberries & Cream and Banoffee can become more than just dessert.

Older adults are at greater risk of malnutrition due to reduced appetite, illness, frailty and changes in taste and smell. Current guidance from the British Dietetic Association (BDA), NICE and the NHS  highlights several key principles that are particularly relevant in care catering:

Protein throughout the day – desserts and snacks can help residents meet

their daily protein needs, rather than relying solely on main meals.

Small portions, big impact – a 77g dessert providing over 8g of protein is a

realistic option for residents with reduced appetites.

Familiarity matters – good nutrition is not just about nutrient content. Familiar, nostalgic flavours and enjoyable foods can encourage food intake, particularly for residents living with dementia.
